Overview

Born in 1948 and having received her education at Central Primary School and the Girls High in Potchefstroom, Behrmann’s artistic journey began with studying art at Bill Ainslie Studios, which eventually evolved into the Johannesburg Art Foundation. This educational background paved the way for her unique combination of painting with a career as an archive researcher for films, books, and museum installations, collaborating with notable figures such as Angus Gibson and William Kentridge in theater installations.

In 1988, Behrmann faced a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, which significantly impacted her ability to paint between 1994 and 1997. During this challenging period, she shifted her focus towards filmmaking. However, she now describes herself as “stabilized and replaced with good spare parts,” indicating an improved health condition.

Despite the obstacles, Behrmann actively participates in exhibitions and undertakes private commissions, showcasing her energetic commitment to her craft. Her studio is located at The Bag Factory in Johannesburg, where she continues to pursue her artistic endeavors.
